Our client, a large pension fund, had purchased a major shipping terminal operation as an ongoing investment.
The pension fund needed existing managers and supervisors to understand basic financial issues and how their activities affected the bottom line of the company and its new owners. Current managers had been promoted from the union bargaining unit.
Client Need
- a way to teach managers why it was essential to bill customers for all services performed
- for managers to understand that value for money spent was received in all capital expenditures
- that purchases met a need and not just a want
- the requirement to provide a return to the new owners as the owners were required to pay pension proceeds out of that return
- a solution that was useful, relevant and engaging to these former hourly workers
- did not want traditional classroom training as the target employees were used to being active and busy
What we did
- after extensive interaction with senior management it was agreed that a generic solution would best meet their need to have all participants learn basic financial literacy
- we adapted the facilitation of the product to meet the needs of the company without the considerable expense of customization
Our Solution
- target group was about 150 employees
- VP Finance and the VP HR attended the pilot session of the program to determine specific tailoring of delivery and suitability of the program to meet the needs of the target group
Result
We delivered a one day simulation on basic financial acumen and literacy to groups of approximately 20 employees over an 18 month period.
We enabled the participants to understand the issues facing the owners, how their decisions impacted the future of the company, and why it is essential to maximize all revenue opportunities.
The participants learned the financial indicators that impacted them and their managers on a daily basis.
