65 is the new 50

As we embark on 2016, it’s clear North America is facing a dramatic and unprecedented change in both its economical and social structures.

The “Baby Boomer” generation is aging, and the current structures are slowly following behind them. Now, more than ever before, the ability to adapt to the ever changing world around us is at the forefront of everything we do.

If smartphones and tablets weren’t enough, it seems that the rest of the world is jumping on board with the swift new approach technology brings with it.

While many people might think recent technology has surpassed our parents, studies prove that today’s older adults are living longer than any previous age group. Statistics show that North American Baby Boomers are healthier than in the past, they are working later in life and are relying less on public retirement benefits and more on other sources of income.

These stats, coupled with my firm belief that no one is ever “too old to learn,” enforce my claim that 65 is the new 50.

Who says your Grandma is too old to have an iPhone or that your dad can’t use a tablet?

Granted they may be slower to pick up on the technology today’s youth seem to have been born with, that is no reason to give up on them. In fact, learning to adapt and having the ability to do so have been proven to contribute to the wellbeing and overall quality of life in older adults.

With the barrage of technology constantly being thrown our way it only seems fair that the older adult generation join the conversation.

Learning should never stop, and with the ease that technology provides no one should ever be deterred from doing so. Whether technology scares you, confuses you or simply disinterests you, why not give it a try?

You might just learn something new!
